The Advocacy Place Garden
Where? Alloa
When? 20 July 2009
What's it about? The Advocacy Place is the home to three advocacy organisations, providing independent advocacy for young people and adults with learning disabilities, older people and people who have mental health problems. All three organisations are charities. At the back of the building there is a space (roughly 8 feet by 24 feet) and we are looking to develop this area to provide a pleasant seating area with planters – perhaps with decking or a paved area. It will need to be fenced off at one end with a gate so that privacy can be maintained, but also to ensure that the security of the garden, when the offices are closed. The garden will be therefore be fully enclosed so climbing plants (preferably scented) would soften the hard edges. However part of the remit is that the garden is low maintenance. The staff of all three organisations and some of the people who use the service are keen to volunteer their time and labour.

In addition to this we will also grow nectar rich flowers such as honeysuckle to encourage butterflies. We will use the local youth club to help us build nestboxes and a pond in our garden. This will raise awareness of the Action Earth project and allow wild birds to visit the area. To the back of the proposed garden is a large wasteland which has several different species of wild birds, ducks and swans, as well as frogs, toads and newts. Outside Inside Learning - Outdoor Classroom
Where? Coatbridge
When? Monday 1st June 2009
What's it about? We are creating an outdoor classroom in our playground. We have designed the shape and we know exactly what we need. (We can send computer generated graphics if you wish to view them). We have the services of an architect who works with the Eco Committee. We have funding for the project. The school pupils, parents and volunteers now need financial help to create an area surrounding the classroom with flowers, shrubs and trees to attract birds, insects and butterflies. This would enhance the pupils learning. This area would help biodiversity within our school grounds and give the whole school community involvement and shared responsibilities as the garden would have to be maintained. This would help create a perfect oasis in our school.

Spring Forward
Where? Girvan
When? 8 March 2009
What's it about? Our garden has been neglected for 30 years and all of the fantastic volunteers have been busy clearance, digging up tree stumps and generally getting stuck into bringing the site back to life for the last year. We have been doing this mostly by hand and it is a big job. We are almost there but we still need to push it forward with another action earth day. We hosted an event last year and it really made a difference. Volunteers will be able to help lay some simple pathways, dig over an area dedicated to attracting wildlife and general garden clearance. Some jobs will be heavy labour and others will be lighter - depending on abilities of volunteers. There will be something for everyone to get involved in. We have an added bonus this year of having a mongolian yurt in the garden which will be used for storytelling sessions and refreshments. There will also be a drystane dyking course happening in the garden seperately from the event but people will be able to get a chance to see how it is done.

Creating a Scottish Native Wildflower garden
Where? Glasgow
When? 5 April 2009
What's it about? We are wishing to change a derelict site in one of our City parks (given to us by the Glasgow City Council) into a site for local schools and the public to visit to see plant that have mostly disappeared from our area. This will involve clearing the site of weeds and levelling it, then emplacing 20 tons of recycled organic waste from the City Council's compost creation plant. This is a rich medium for plant growing and into this we will plant wildflower species - dog's mercury, primrose, giant bellflower, pinks, enchanter's nightshade, etc amounting to over 20 species from reliable sources. The first stage will involved the "bordering" of the area (30 feet x 20 feet) with recycled and treated scaffolding planks to hold the new soil until it sets over the next few years. The grant applied for would be used to buy these planks at 4.50 pounds each, (10 planks. Our volunteers would come from the corporate sector and young local people.

SNHYoung Ness
Where? Lanarkshire
When? 14th May 2009
What's it about? The S3 Boys group have opted to take part in the ongoing work to develop Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park near Wishaw, Lanarkshire. They will be working with Rangers and adult volunteers on a range of initiatives which will enhance the bio-diversity and accessibility of the Park to the local community and beyond. An initial meeting with the boys and the Rangers week ending 1st May provided an opportunity for a guided walk aroun the Park and insight into the work to be done. The boys will be clearing pathways and planting new shrubs trees and wild flowers to attract a variety of insect and butterflies. They will be involved in pond construction and marsh ground creation which it is hoped will increase the frog population. Already in existence is a large pond area currently home to nesting swans and ducks and the boys will be helping to build new public access and viewing areas along with any litter or debris clearing. In a small part of the Park work will begin shortly on building an "earthship" similar to the one based at Kinghorn in Fife. The boys will have some input into this project but it was made clear at the meeting with the Rangers the focus will be primarily on the Park itself and improvement areas for public access and attraction of insect and wildlife in a sustainable way. The work will include most aspects of the box headings below and there is also the opportunity to build nesting boxes within school which will contribute towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award skill section. We are using the DoE Award to accredit the learning the boys are undertaking and their work at Greenhead Moss will enable them to complete their Service Section
